Project “Stairway to Heaven” – Seminar about human rights for Russian LGBT
Saturday, 07 March 2009

On March 1 2009, Movement For The Rights Of Lesbian Gays Bisexual And Transgender People In Russia – LGBT Rights – in partnership with  Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG) conducted a seminar devoted to human rights.

The topic, obviously, can’t be more urgent in circumstances of modern Russia.
Nina Tagankina – executive director of MHG, who works in human rights movement for more than 40 years – and her colleague, Denis Nikitenko – representative from Arkhangelsk’s LGBT-organization “Rakurs” – were speakers during the seminar.

Course of the seminar was determined according to questions from the audience. The most attention were devoted to following topics: basic definition and regulations of human rights, history of human rights, modern situation with human rights in Russia and abroad, perspectives of development of human rights movement in Russia, application of human rights concept to LGBT-communities.

Ultimate goal of seminar was to popularize human rights movement and to enlighten the audience on questions that relate to their everyday concerns. And of course this event became an attempt to show LGBT-communities what rights they are entitled to, and that there are people and organizations that are ready to help them and to stand up for their rights.
Speakers of seminar told participants, that concept of human rights emerged after World War II in response to genocide against certain populations and the humanity on whole. Till today human rights as legal category exist, so states guarantee their citizens and each other that such events will never happen again not in regard of one individual or specific group.
