Day of the coming-out and campaign against the failure of the festival "Side by side".
Sunday, 12 October 2008
Yesterday on October, 11th, activists of the movement for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals rights (LGBT Rights) waged a news-sheet material campaign supporting the festival "Side by side" and the International day of a coming-out which passed in Russia for the first time!

The main thought of the campaign was to interest public, on the shirts of activists it was written «Are we fire dangerous?! ». It, certainly, appeared to be effective as many people asked what does it mean and our answer we gave in the form of the prepared material in which was presented information concerning failure and abolition of the Festival.
Festival was planned to be hold in the beginning of October. It included display of movies; many of them have world awards in different directions. Its purpose was education of the public and rapprochement of LGBT representatives with a society.

Festival was forbidden in cinema halls of St.-Petersburg, and even rent of private clubs didn’t help to hold out action for the people who have already bought tickets to it and ticket for the train to Petersburg. These clubs were unexpectedly closed by fire inspection. It is clear that clubs did not represent fire danger, rather they considered that gay community which tries to solve problems of discrimination and misunderstanding in society is fire danger.

Despite the evening coolness and fallen leaves reminding of leaving summer, people read news-sheet willingly and asked questions concerning festival. Some of them supported the power breaking human’s rights, but the majority counted those actions to be shocking.

Also activists distributed leaflets devoted to day of the coming-out in which it was described what it is. Many heterosexuals didn’t know what LGBT is and what problems are connected with closeness of this group. Some people, of course, turned away, informing that it does not interest them at all, but I dare to assure, it concerns everyone, as well as many problems of society on a whole.

Representatives of LGBT rights were interested in the information given to them and wanted to learn as much as possible about movement and about those actions in which they could take part and where to search for the additional information. They expressed sincere sympathy and gratitude - thanks them for it. Also I noticed that even among them there was no special awareness on what a coming-out is, and activists willingly shared their knowledge with them.
It was not the first and not the last campaign for public enlightenment which we held and we know that it is one of the most important points for the formation of public consciousness and achievement of deeper understanding of any heterodoxy.

We thank LGBT organization from Saint-Petersburg "Vihod" (Coming Out) for given us necessary materials, and for suggestion to spend the International day of the coming-out in Russia.
